Not all sunglasses are the same. There are two main aspects to providing a quality sunglass; Ultra Violet light (UV) protection and polarisation. In Australia we have standards which grade how well a sunglass blocks the damaging UV rays from the sun, with 0-1 being little to no UV protection. Polarisation is a filter built into sunglasses to reduce glare by blocking reflected light off surfaces like water, roads, car bonnets, windows and buildings etc. All polarised sunglasses will also have good UV protection.

The pupil (black part, circle on the surface of your eye) is a hole which means those damaging sun rays can pass through to the internals of your eye, as well.
